Mike Gustafson started racing in the Sportsman division in the 1970s and won the 1980 championship by a few points over Sam Houston. He ran a little bit in 1981 before winning several Super Stock races at Petaluma Speedway in the 1980s and then switching over to the Late Model division in the 1990s for more wins.
Gustafson fielded a car built by John Michael Soares and started racing in the new Super Stock division that the track introduced in 2000. He won a pair of championships in that class and has won over 50 Main Events since then. Gustafson is estimated to have racked up oround 100 feature victories between Petaluma and Antioch Speedway, oftentimes in his trademark blue race car and fire suit, which earned him the nickname The Blue Knight by old announcer Harry Osborne.
