Sharon Smith
The Smith family has been involved in Antioch Speedway since the 1960s. Chuck Smith was a Stock Car driver who went on to run Enduros and later was better known for his push vehicles. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame In 2019. Meanwhile, his wife Sharon was also heavily involved with the program.
Sharon took an interest in scorekeeping. In those days, we didn't have electronic scoring, and you had to be quick. You had to write down every number as the cars passed the start finish/line every lap, and Sharon was good at what she did.
Making her even more impressive was the fact that she had only one hand. This didn't stop her from devoting her time to getting better and rising up to become the head scorekeeper. Along the way, she had earned the respect of the racers as somebody who would explain things to them if they weren't sure why they were scored where they were.
Sharon is a fine example of what happens when you don't give up and keep doing the things that make you happy. She made a difference in her time at Antioch Speedway in keeping score and making sure everybody got lined up properly for the next restart.
